UK’s New PM, and what this means for immigration laws

With the prompt departure of Liz Truss, and the swift take-over of 10 Downing Street by Rishi Sunak, those looking to relocate to the UK are questioning whether his economic policy involves stricter immigration rules.

So how will this affect immigration laws in the UK?

For years, Commonwealth citizens have been wondering whether the Ancestry visa will come to an end, or whether Scotland will leave the UK. The UK’s Conservative party has always promised to tighten the number of immigrants coming into the country but has never succeeded to do so – except for Brexit which, some could say, backfired massively. However, due to a recent study, the British population’s concern surrounding immigration is at an all-time low, so this does not appear to be a main concern anymore (aside from the mention of limiting the number of those being granted asylum).

How does the point system work?

The UK has adopted an “Australian-style” points-based system for Skilled Workers wanting to work in the UK, which has only caused frustration for employers due to the high cost of obtaining a Sponsorship License. With Brexit, they had promised to relax this process but it is yet to be seen. With that being said, hopefully the new Prime Minister will stick to fixing the issues troubling the UK’s economy and the public, rather than strengthening laws which would prohibit those with a birth-right to apply for visas!
